How to use a Directory
|Business Directories have been around for a long time, long before the Internet existed. One of the best known is the Telephone Directory. Today’s software offers an “Off the Shelf” solution to anybody that plans a Directory. This website is based on the well known WordPress program, so it was logical to find a solution which would work on the core program. After a reasonable amount of investigation and trials, a suitable product was found. But why would I want to create a Directory is perhaps the more important question?
Often the first reason is because you want to make money and creating a Directory which accepts payment is a popular reason. The problem with this idea is that unless you have something different from anybody else (unlikely) the applications may be too limited to every show a profit. Added to that is the need to manage the Directory and promote the benefits to the target customer base. This all takes time and effort for very uncertain results.
So there must be a reason
One popular reason for a Directory is to showcase the companies products and services, but there are many other possibilities. For example, a public Directory of all of the agents, or depots. A Directory public or private of staff. For a membership of a club, or maybe a group of enthusiasts. Trade Directories of all type. Directories for towns or maybe an art collection. Wikipedia’s view of a Directory is interesting, it really does not address the possibilities of a modern Directory.
So a Directory is a collection of a group of something, only you can decide if this is the best solution to the problem. Remember a Directory must be active, serve a purpose and be found when needed. Here are two examples of a business Directory using the same software. The Northampton Business Directory and the UK Exporters Directory Both use a SSL certificate for protection of data protection.
